Is the synergy talk a red flag?

It feels like we’re back in a loop of constant realignment. Every time we hear about 'simplifying the organizational structure,' it feels like a soft launch for a headcount reduction. I've noticed a lot more consultants walking around the office lately, and we all know what that usually means—someone is looking at a spreadsheet and trying to find places to trim the fat. The workload has been getting dumped on the survivors over the last six months, which is a classic sign they are trying to prove we can do more with fewer people. If you are in sales or product development, are you seeing any actual investment in new projects, or are things pretty stagnant? I’m starting to get that pit in my stomach. Let me know if I’m just being paranoid or if the writing is actually on the wall this time.

The 'synergy' buzzword is corporate shorthand for layoffs every single time. If you see consultants hovering, start updating your resume immediately. They aren't there to improve your workflow; they are there to identify which roles can be consolidated to inflate the bottom line before the next earnings call. It is a predictable cycle, and the workload being dumped on you is just the company testing how much they can squeeze out of the remaining staff. Protect yourself and look elsewhere before the axe actually falls.

It's frustrating to watch the same playbook get reused year after year. While leadership frames these realignments as 'optimizing for growth,' those of us on the floor know the reality of the situation. The increase in consultant presence is almost always a precursor to a restructuring announcement. I’ve been through enough of these cycles to know that if you’re already feeling the burnout from the added workload, it’s a clear signal that the company is preparing for another reduction. Don't wait for the official memo to start networking; keep your options open.
