It’s finally happened. Got the notification earlier today about the 416 headcount reduction at the E Algonquin site. Honestly, if you’ve been paying attention to the internal town halls over the last few months, you knew this was coming. Leadership kept throwing around words like 'streamlining' and 'operational efficiency,' which we all know is just corporate speak for 'let’s cut costs to make the Q1 numbers look better for the street.' I’ve been here for over six years and it’s gut-wrenching to see so many solid engineers and analysts get their access cut before lunch. The severance package is standard, but it doesn't make the pill any easier to swallow. I’m currently waiting on my exit paperwork, but I wanted to jump on here to see if anyone else in the affected groups is getting decent transition support. Are they actually offering job placement services, or is that just another empty promise? If anyone has contacts at other medical device firms in the Chicago area that are actually hiring, please reach out. Stay strong everyone, this company isn't what it used to be.

I am so sorry you are going through this. It is incredibly frustrating how they hide behind buzzwords like 'operational efficiency' while real people’s livelihoods are being discarded just to satisfy quarterly earnings reports. Six years is a long time to give to a company only to be treated like a line item on a spreadsheet. Please take care of yourself during this transition and know that your value isn't defined by their poor management decisions. Take some time to breathe and start networking when you are ready.

Unfortunately, this is the standard playbook for Abbott lately. They have been telegraphing these moves for months, and it’s always the same story: sacrifice the workforce to keep the stock price inflated for the analysts. Anyone who has been paying attention saw this shift coming a mile away, but that doesn't make the reality of the layoffs any less brutal. The corporate culture has become completely detached from the people doing the actual work. It’s a sad day for everyone at the Algonquin site, and frankly, nobody should be surprised given the current direction.
