Anyone else getting 'performance improvement' talks out of nowhere?

Been in QA for about 4 years now, mostly on the Diablo side. Everything's been chill, hitting targets, good feedback. Suddenly last week my lead calls me in and wants to put me on a 'performance improvement plan.' Says it's 'standard procedure' but it feels totally out of the blue. No warnings, no prior discussions about needing improvement. Just BAM, PIP. Makes me wonder if this is just a way to clear people out quietly before any actual *official* layoffs happen. Anyone else in a similar boat? What's the deal?
