Is it just me or are internal transfers drying up?

Been trying to move to a different team for like 6 months now. Usually, there are always openings and people moving around, especially from my area (QA). But lately, it feels like a total freeze. Checked internal job board and the same few roles have been posted forever. My manager is hinting at 'efficiency improvements' which sounds like a nice way of saying 'we're not hiring externally or internally right now'. Anyone else notice this? It's making me think about polishing up my resume for real this time, which I really didn't want to do. Just feels like the internal ladder is broken.

Yeah, I've been feeling that too, though not in QA specifically. It feels like hiring, both internal and external, has definitely slowed to a crawl. The 'efficiency improvements' line is definitely a red flag, seems like a euphemism for cost-cutting measures across the board. Don't blame you for dusting off the resume. It's tough when you feel stuck and the usual pathways are blocked. Hang in there, hopefully, things open up soon.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd call it a 'freeze' so much as a recalibration. Companies often pull back on internal mobility when they're reassessing needs or facing budget constraints. 'Efficiency improvements' could mean they're consolidating roles or restructuring. Before you jump ship, maybe have a frank conversation with your manager about what these improvements actually entail and if there are any internal projects you could contribute to that might be more visible or valued. Sometimes you just need to ride out the lull.
