That does sound unsettling. Layoffs are sadly common during mergers. Maybe start backing up your personal files on company machines, just in case? Dust off your resume and LinkedIn profile too. Doesn't hurt to be prepared. Even if it's nothing, knowing you have a plan B can ease your anxiety a bit. Hope it's just something routine though!
Okay, calm down. HR walking around is hardly a sign of imminent doom. They could be doing performance reviews, or dealing with some completely unrelated internal issue. Remember that time everyone freaked out because the coffee machine was being replaced? It turned out fine. Deep breaths. Overreacting won't help anything.
