Manager suddenly super interested in 'streamlining' my team's workload.

My manager called me into a private meeting yesterday. Normally, these are about project updates, but this felt… different. They kept asking detailed questions about my individual tasks, who does what on my immediate team, and how long each process takes. When I asked why, they said something about "optimizing resource allocation" and "ensuring maximum productivity." They also mentioned something about "evaluating current team structures to better support upcoming goals." Sounds like a lot of corporate speak for 'figuring out who's doing what so they can get rid of some people.' It's not just my team; I've heard similar stories from folks on other departments too. No official announcement, no all-hands about layoffs, but this feels like the prelude. Anyone else experiencing this level of 'efficiency review' from their management?

Sounds like the classic prelude to layoffs or a reorg, unfortunately. "Optimizing resource allocation" and "evaluating team structures" are often corporate buzzwords for cutting costs. Keep meticulous notes on everything and start discreetly updating your resume. Hopefully, it's just an innocent efficiency push, but it's better to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.

Ugh, I've been through that. "Streamlining" is such a loaded term in management speak. It usually means they're trying to figure out who's doing the least or who can be replaced by automation or fewer people. Demand clarity if you can, but don't expect them to spill the beans if it's bad news. Start polishing that LinkedIn profile just in case.
