Is the 4% figure actually just the tip of the iceberg?

Been reading the conflicting reports all morning. The WARN notice is officially out for CA, but that number feels like a rounding error compared to what’s being whispered in the hallways. I’ve been here for over six years and the atmosphere is the worst I’ve ever seen it. People are walking around like zombies, and the 'open door' policy from leadership has effectively become a brick wall. My manager had a one-on-one with me yesterday that felt incredibly scripted—lots of talk about 'realigning resources' and 'efficiency,' but no concrete answers on project roadmaps. If they are cutting 1,000+ people globally, why keep the remaining staff in the dark? It’s soul-crushing to see talented engineers just packing up their desks while HR keeps sending out those tone-deaf emails about 'innovation' and 'winning in the AI era.' Anyone else in the Santa Clara office feeling like the RIF is going to come in waves through Q1? At this point, I’d almost prefer they just rip the band-aid off so we can stop checking our email every five minutes waiting for a calendar invite from HR. It’s hard to focus on shipping code when you feel like a sacrificial lamb.

That atmosphere sounds absolutely draining. When leadership stops being transparent and leans into scripted PR speak, it is usually a sign that they are hiding the true scope of the situation. A 4% cut rarely happens in a vacuum, especially when the internal culture feels that dead. If the hallway whispers are pointing toward a deeper instability, trust your gut and start quietly updating your portfolio. It is better to have an exit plan ready than to get caught off guard when the next shoe drops.

I have been through three rounds of layoffs at major tech companies, and the 'scripted manager' bit is always the tell. It is not about realignment; it is about damage control. If the WARN notice doesn't match the energy on the floor, the company is almost certainly staggering the cuts to avoid a bigger PR nightmare or legal scrutiny. Keep your head down, document everything you have worked on, and don't mistake their 'open door' policy for genuine concern. Look out for yourself, because they definitely aren't.
