Middle management seems to be panicking over Opex

It’s getting ridiculous. My director spent twenty minutes in our weekly meeting harping on about 'cost discipline' and how we need to trim the fat on project budgets. The irony is that we are being asked to deliver on tighter timelines while they simultaneously slash the budget for the tools we actually need to hit those marks. It feels like they are creating a paper trail to justify why performance might drop, or worse, setting the stage for restructuring. Every time the word 'optimization' comes up in a presentation, I know my team is about to have a rough month. Is anyone else seeing this heavy-handed approach in their specific org, or is this isolated to the industrial group? Tired of the constant pivot to survival mode when we're supposed to be focusing on long-term innovation.

That sounds all too familiar. Every time leadership starts chanting the 'cost discipline' mantra, it’s usually the precursor to a quiet cull or a hiring freeze. It’s impossible to increase output while simultaneously cutting the resources that facilitate that work. They want the numbers to look perfect on a spreadsheet for the next earnings call, but they are completely ignoring the operational reality on the ground. Keep your head down and start updating your portfolio, because this fixation on Opex never ends well for the actual engineering teams.
