August 21st Cuts: Is the Culture Officially Dead?

It’s been a rough 24 hours at the Park. I’ve been here for over six years, and today felt different. The rumors were swirling for weeks, but seeing people walking out with their boxes this morning made it real. It wasn't just the Vision Pro team this time; it feels like they’re gutting middle management across the board to pad the margins for the Q4 earnings call. What really hurts is the lack of transparency. We got the generic memo about 'streamlining resources' and 'shifting priorities toward AI,' but it feels like the same old story of Wall Street dictating our headcount. Management talks about 'One Apple,' but when you see long-term folks being cut with zero lead time, it’s hard to stay bought in. Is anyone else feeling like the 'special' feeling of working here has completely evaporated? I’m looking at my badge right now and honestly wondering if I even want to be here tomorrow. To those who were let go today—I'm truly sorry. This place used to care about its people, or at least that’s what they told us during orientation.

The 'streamlining' language is just corporate speak for prioritizing Wall Street over the workforce that actually built the brand. It’s wild to watch a company with these kinds of cash reserves treat loyal employees like disposable assets just to satisfy a quarterly earnings call. The culture at the Park hasn't felt like the old Apple in a long time, but this wave of layoffs feels like the final nail in the coffin. When you treat people as numbers, you stop attracting the innovators who care about the product and start attracting the ones who only care about the exit strategy.

I was there for the transition from the Jobs era, and it’s genuinely depressing to see how much has changed. Every few years, they purge middle management to fluff up the margins, but it always comes at the cost of actual product cohesion. It used to be about the craft, but now it’s all about service revenue and stock buybacks. If you’ve been there six years, you know the vibe shift isn't just in your head. It’s becoming just another tech giant where you’re lucky to survive a performance cycle without being spreadsheeted out of a job.
