The 'Apple values' are dead: Thoughts on the new headcount mandates?

Is anyone else feeling like the culture we signed up for has completely evaporated? Between the constant threat of relocation mandates to Texas and these recurring 'efficiency' cuts, it’s becoming impossible to actually focus on building high-quality software. It feels like the finance team is running the show now, and the engineering culture that made this place special is being sacrificed to keep the stock price propped up. I used to be proud to tell people where I worked, but now it just feels like working for any other faceless corporate conglomerate that treats human beings like overhead. The leadership talk about 'innovation' while actively gutting the teams responsible for delivering it is just gaslighting at this point. I’m exhausted. The insecurity is creating a toxic environment where everyone is just looking over their shoulder instead of collaborating. If they think this kind of pressure drives performance, they’ve clearly lost the plot.

It is honestly depressing to watch from the outside. I remember when Apple was synonymous with 'it just works' and a deep respect for the craft of engineering. Now, it feels like every single decision is filtered through a quarterly earnings lens rather than a commitment to the user experience. You aren't imagining things; when you prioritize headcount efficiency over long-term technical debt and employee retention, the quality is inevitably going to take a hit. It’s starting to look like just another massive corporate machine, and that is a real shame for the industry.

I don’t really see the problem. Every massive tech company goes through these cycles once they hit a certain maturity level. If you want a small-company startup vibe where everything is creative freedom and no accountability, you’re in the wrong place. These mandates are just standard business operations to keep margins high and satisfy investors, which is literally the point of a public company. If the culture isn't a fit for your lifestyle anymore, it’s probably time to stop complaining and start looking for a smaller firm that actually values the work-life balance you are looking for.
