Okay, so I'm not *expecting* a layoff (knock on wood), but I'm trying to be prepared. For those of you who have been through a layoff at AT&T in the past few years, what was the typical severance package like? Specifically, I'm curious about how much notice they gave before your last day, and what the formula was for severance pay (e.g., weeks per year of service). Also, did they offer any outplacement services or extended benefits? I've heard horror stories of only a few weeks' notice, but I'm hoping that's not the norm. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I was laid off last year after 15 years. We got 60 days' notice, which wasn't nearly enough to find something new, but better than nothing. The severance was two weeks per year of service, plus they paid out accrued vacation time. They did offer some online resume writing and job search resources, but honestly, they weren't that helpful. Don't put too much stock in past experiences. They change the packages constantly depending on the financial climate and how many people they're letting go. A friend of mine got basically the bare minimum last time, even after 20 years. Read the fine print carefully *before* signing anything. Negotiate if you can, but honestly, they hold all the cards. Start updating your resume now, just in case. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
