Heard a rumor about possible layoffs - how to prep?

So, I overheard a conversation between two managers near the coffee machine (yeah, I know, eavesdropping isn't great). They were talking about 'performance reviews' and 'potential cost savings' and the word 'layoffs' definitely came up. I'm in the Media & Entertainment group, been here for 2 years, and while I think my performance is solid, you never really know. For those who've been through this before at Autodesk (or other companies), what's the best way to prepare? I'm updating my resume, of course. Should I start discreetly reaching out to contacts? Any advice on negotiating severance if it comes to that? Trying not to panic, but want to be proactive. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, even if it's just a rumor, it's always good to be prepared. Dust off that resume, start networking a bit, and think about what projects you can highlight in your portfolio. Document everything you've accomplished in the past year – quantifiable results are your best friend. Also, familiarize yourself with the company's severance package if you can find details on it. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

Take it with a grain of salt. Coffee machine talk is rarely accurate. But, since you're already thinking about it, back up all your important files to a personal drive *now*. I had a friend caught off guard in a similar situation and they lost a ton of valuable work. Updating your LinkedIn is also a smart move – passively putting feelers out there never hurts, regardless.
