Thinking about leaving before the axe falls - advice?

Been hearing whispers for months, and honestly, I'm not waiting around to find out. I'm a product manager in the AEC division, been here 3 years. I've seen this happen before at another company, and the stress of waiting is worse than the actual job search. So, I'm proactively looking. My question is, how honest should I be with recruiters about why I'm leaving? Do I mention the layoff rumors at Autodesk, or just say I'm looking for new challenges? I don't want to badmouth my employer, but I also don't want to look like I'm jumping ship for no reason. Any advice from people who've been through this before? Also, any tips on negotiating a new salary when you're not technically unemployed?

Honestly, been there. Playing it safe is smart. I'd frame it as 'seeking opportunities for growth' or 'interested in expanding my skill set in X area'. Recruiters hear layoff stories all the time, but they ultimately care about your skills and how you fit at *their* company. No need to trash Autodesk, just focus on what you bring to the table and the specific role you're applying for. Good luck with the search!

Three years isn't a long time, and leaving right before potential layoffs might make you look bad. Unless you *know* for sure, or have a golden opportunity, I'd hold off. Companies *always* have 'restructuring', and it's often overblown. But, if you're determined to leave, 'seeking new challenges' is the go-to line. Don't mention the layoffs; it can come across as gossipy and might hurt your chances.
