Hypothetical severance question - what to expect?

Okay, so let's say, *hypothetically*, Broadcom were to announce layoffs. What kind of severance package are we talking about? I've heard rumors of 2 weeks per year of service, but that seems low compared to other companies. I'm in engineering, been here for 5 years. Also, what about stock options? Do they vest immediately? I know it depends on the grant, but what's the general policy? Any insights from past Broadcom layoffs (or acquisitions) would be greatly appreciated. Trying to be prepared, just in case.

Heard the same 2 weeks per year thing, and honestly, it's probably accurate. Don't get your hopes up. Stock options are usually gonezo unless they were vesting within the next few months, maybe they'll accelerate them, but I wouldn't count on it. Start polishing that resume now. Best defense is a good offense. Good luck!

Five years is a decent chunk of time. A lot depends on your level and how 'valuable' they consider you. I've seen severance packages range from absolute garbage to surprisingly generous, even within the same company during the same layoff. Don't assume the worst, but definitely start networking and looking at job openings. Knowledge is power. Gather your performance reviews and document your accomplishments now.
