I was in the exact same boat until last month. The internal mobility talk is mostly smoke and mirrors designed to keep you from jumping ship before they decide to downsize your department. I spent two years networking and trying to move internally, but every internal role was either frozen or filled by an external hire. Once the trust is gone and the burnout sets in, it’s rarely worth staying. I found a new role elsewhere, and the difference in management quality is night and day. Start looking now while you still have the energy to interview.
Honestly, it feels like the current strategy is just to ride the existing staff into the ground until the headcount targets are met. I’ve stopped trying to exceed expectations because the reward for good work here is just more work from the empty desks around you. There is no strategic alignment, just cost-cutting disguised as a transition. Unless you are specifically waiting on a large bonus payout, you are better off polishing your resume. It’s hard to see the rot when you’re in the middle of it, but there are definitely better-managed firms hiring right now.
