Quiet hiring freeze in engineering/product?

Has anyone else noticed that backfilling roles has basically ground to a halt over the last month? I’ve had two open recs for my team get pulled by finance without much of an explanation. My director is being super cagey about the Q3 budget, just telling us to 'prioritize core initiatives' and 'do more with less.' It feels like we are drifting toward a soft freeze. I’m starting to get that nervous feeling in my gut, especially since the rumor mill is spinning hard about potential restructuring in the Denver and Philly hubs. I’m already dusting off the resume just in case, but I’d rather not jump ship if this is just standard end-of-quarter bean counting. Is anyone else seeing the same patterns in their org, or is my leadership just particularly tight-fisted right now?

Same situation here in the Xfinity division. We had a senior dev role ready to post last week, but it suddenly vanished from the dashboard after finance reviewed our headcount allocation. My manager won't look me in the eye when I ask about it, just repeats the 'resource optimization' mantra. It’s definitely not just you. The vibe is tense, and most of us are quietly refreshing our portfolios just in case. They never announce these freezes officially, they just let the attrition happen until there is no one left to complain.

I’ve been through enough cycles here to know exactly what this looks like. When they start pulling recs without a clear reason, it’s a massive red flag that the Q3 margins are looking thinner than expected. I’d trust your gut—the 'do more with less' talk is corporate speak for budget tightening that usually precedes a broader restructuring. Honestly, start polishing your resume now. It’s better to be prepared with options elsewhere before the announcement hits your inbox. Don't wait around for them to tell you the truth.
