Anyone else notice the sudden push for 'voluntary' separations?

Is it just me, or does it feel like the 176 cuts were just the appetizer? Ever since the news hit, my manager has been dropping heavy hints in our 1:1s about 'voluntary alignment programs.' They keep framing it as a way to avoid involuntary measures, but we all know the drill—they want the headcount reduction without the PR hit of more layoffs. I’ve been at Con Ed for over a decade, and the atmosphere has completely shifted. It used to be a place where you could build a career, but now it feels like every department is just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Has anyone actually seen a VSP offer yet, or are they just trying to gauge who is looking to leave before they start the next round of 'efficiency' cuts? The lack of transparency is killing morale. I’m starting to polish the resume tonight because sitting around waiting for my number to come up is taking a massive toll on my mental health.

I’ve been hearing the exact same thing in my department. It’s classic corporate theater. They love the voluntary route because it’s cheaper and keeps the optics clean, but they definitely have a target number in mind. If they don't hit their goal through these 'voluntary' programs, you can bet the forced layoffs are coming right behind them. It’s honestly exhausting watching the culture erode like this. Just keep your head down, update your resume, and don't take the bait until you have a real exit plan in place.

Honestly, I’m not even surprised anymore. Con Ed has been heading this way for a while now. They keep dangling these packages in front of people to dodge the negative headlines, but the writing is on the wall. The stress of waiting to see who jumps ship versus who gets pushed is exactly what they want—it makes people scramble. If you've got the tenure, maybe look into the package, but don't let them pressure you into a bad deal just because they’re cutting corners on headcount.
