Quiet internal restructuring or just paranoia?

It’s been a weird month. We had two senior leads leave out of nowhere last week, and their roles haven't been backfilled. Instead, the responsibilities just got dumped onto the rest of us without any adjustment to our goals. Every time I log into Teams, I’m seeing more 'Out of Office' status icons that stay there for weeks. My manager keeps telling me everything is fine when I bring it up, but the lack of transparency is starting to get to me. We’re hearing crickets from the leadership team regarding Q3 projections, and the general mood in the office is pretty bleak. Are we waiting for the other shoe to drop? I feel like I’m walking on eggshells every time an HR notification pops up in my inbox. Has anyone else noticed their department shrinking, or is it just my floor that feels like a ghost town?

That sounds exactly like the playbook they used before the last major round of headcount reductions. When senior roles are left vacant and duties are silently offloaded to the remaining staff, it is rarely a coincidence. The 'everything is fine' line is standard management protocol to prevent a mass exodus before they are ready to announce formal changes. Start updating your resume quietly and look at the internal job board to see if those roles were ever actually posted. Trust your gut; transparency is usually the first thing to go when leadership is preparing for a shift.

I have been at Dell long enough to know that 'crickets from leadership' is the loudest signal you can get. If your direct manager is dodging questions, they likely signed an NDA or simply don't know enough themselves to speak freely. It is infuriating, but they are trying to keep the ship steady until the next quarter's projections are finalized. Use this downtime to download any project samples you might need for your portfolio and keep your LinkedIn profile active. Don't let the stress consume you, but definitely prepare for the worst-case scenario while hoping for the best.
