I'm trying to get a realistic picture of what severance looks like at Dell. I've heard different things from different people, and HR is always vague. I'm trying to plan ahead, just in case. Specifically, I'm wondering about things like: * Weeks of pay per year of service * Continuation of benefits (health, dental, etc.) * Outplacement services * Accrued vacation payout Has anyone gone through a layoff at Dell recently and can share their experience? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Trying to prepare myself and my family for the worst.

It really varies depending on your level and org. In the past, I've seen anywhere from 2 weeks per year of service to a flat 6-month package for higher-level folks. Health benefits usually continue for a few months, but you'll be paying the full premium. Outplacement is hit or miss. They offer it, but the quality isn't always great. Definitely push for as much as you can get. Don't be afraid to negotiate!

Don't get your hopes up too high. Dell severance packages used to be pretty generous, but they've definitely tightened the purse strings in recent years. Expect the bare minimum, and be pleasantly surprised if you get more. They will pay out accrued vacation time, though. Start looking for another job *now* while you still have one. That's the best preparation you can do.
