It is exactly the same on my floor. Leadership keeps pushing this narrative about organic innovation and face-to-face synergy, but everyone knows it is just a thinly veiled attrition tactic. We spend our office days tethered to headsets, avoiding eye contact with the HR people walking by, waiting for the inevitable invite to appear in our calendars. If they want us to be productive, they should at least stop making us commute just to provide background noise for their remote meetings while we wonder if we are next on the chopping block.
The RTO mandate is just a psychological game at this point. They know exactly how demoralizing it is to sit in an empty-ish office and do the exact same tasks we did perfectly well from home. By forcing the issue, they are banking on the people who value their time and flexibility to walk away on their own, saving the company the severance costs. It is a cynical way to manage a workforce, and it is destroying whatever morale was left after the recent rounds of layoffs.
