I've been hearing similar things anecdotally. It's tough when the official communication is so vague and the rumor mill starts churning. My guess is it's a mix of things – some project wind-downs, some strategic realignments in specific service lines that aren't performing as expected. The market's been volatile, and I imagine consulting firms are feeling the pressure to optimize resources. Hopefully, it's not as widespread as some fear, but it's definitely a tense atmosphere right now. Keep an eye on internal announcements, though I suspect those will be just as opaque.
It's always a bit of a guessing game with these large firms. 'Restructuring' and 'optimization' are common buzzwords when headcount adjustments are happening. The lack of a specific number from management often suggests they don't want to cause panic or give a clear target for people to rally against. It's possible they're evaluating performance across the board and making decisions based on that, or perhaps certain practice areas are seeing reduced demand. It's a worrying time for sure, and transparency would go a long way in managing employee morale.
