Heard whispers about 'performance reviews'...are they laying groundwork for cuts?

Anyone else feeling super anxious about the upcoming performance review cycle? My manager keeps hinting at 'difficult conversations' and 'aligning expectations'. I'm in Risk & Financial Advisory, been here almost 3 years, and honestly, my projects have been solid. I've consistently gotten 'meets expectations' or even a 'role model' on a few projects. But these vibes are OFF. It feels like they're prepping us for something. I know the utilization rates haven't been great across the board. Are they going to use these reviews as an excuse to quietly trim the fat? Anyone else hearing similar things in their practice?

Yeah, I'm in Consulting and hearing similar things. The 'difficult conversations' line is a HUGE red flag. Three years with solid reviews? Sounds like you're doing your job. Honestly, update your resume and start passively looking. It never hurts to be prepared, especially if your gut is telling you something's off. Better safe than sorry in this market.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here. 'Aligning expectations' could genuinely mean they're trying to get everyone on the same page after some shifting priorities. Three years is a while, and companies evolve. Maybe they're just tightening up processes. I wouldn't panic *yet*. Focus on showcasing your accomplishments during the review. Come prepared with quantifiable results to back up your claims of solid performance.
