Is anyone actually safe at Devon? January layoffs were a wake-up call

I’ve been at Devon for five years now and I’ve never seen the mood this low. We keep hearing the company line about 'operational efficiency' and 'realigning resources,' but at the end of the day, it just means 76 of our colleagues are out on the street while the stock price is just hovering. I’m tired of the vague town halls where they talk around the elephant in the room. Does leadership actually think we don't notice that these cuts are becoming a pattern? At this point, I don’t even care about the 'culture' or the 'mission'—I just want to know if my desk is going to be there on Monday. It feels like nobody is safe regardless of performance reviews or tenure. If you’re looking elsewhere, where are you seeing the most stability? I think it’s time to start looking for an exit strategy because this place is clearly trimming the fat to appease shareholders, and we’re the ones paying for it.

The mood in the office is definitely shifting. It feels like every quarter now we’re waiting for the next shoe to drop, and the vague messaging from the top is only fueling the anxiety. When they use terms like 'efficiency' to justify losing good people, it completely erodes trust. You aren’t alone in feeling this way; everyone I talk to is polishing their resume just in case. It used to feel like a stable place to build a career, but that sentiment is vanishing fast. It’s hard to stay focused when you’re constantly wondering if you’re next on the list.

Look, it's brutal, but this is the reality of the oil and gas sector lately. Devon isn't unique in its pursuit of margins over headcount, even if the town halls are frustratingly hollow. Leadership is clearly prioritizeing shareholders over retention, and unfortunately, we’re all just line items on a balance sheet to them. Stop looking for transparency in those meetings because you’re never going to get it. Protect your own interests, keep your head down, and make sure your exit strategy is ready. Loyalty doesn't pay the bills once they decide to pivot.
