It’s been a rough few days since the news dropped on the 14th. I’m currently sitting at my desk in Lansing just waiting to see if a meeting invite pops up. The official numbers are sitting at 361, but the floor feels completely hollow today. I've heard rumors that this isn't the end of the wave, just the beginning of the Q3 adjustment, but honestly, at this point, I don't know who to believe. Leadership hasn't sent a single transparent email since the press releases hit the news sites. I’ve been with GM for over six years, and I’ve never seen the culture feel this toxic. People are just walking around with their heads down, checking their personal phones, and updating their LinkedIn profiles in plain sight. It’s impossible to focus on any deliverables when you’re constantly checking your inbox for a 'mandatory check-in' calendar invite. If you were impacted or know someone who was, can you confirm if they gave notice or if it was immediate access cut-off? Trying to manage my anxiety here and figure out if I need to start clearing out my personal files today.

The silence from leadership is deafening, which is exactly how they like it. If you are sitting there waiting for a transparent email, you’re going to be waiting a long time. They’ve already made their Q3 calculations, and human capital is just a line item they are trimming to appease the shareholders. Use this time to update your resume and start pinging your contacts outside the company. Being loyal to a place that treats the floor like it’s replaceable is a losing game. Don't wait for the meeting invite to start looking for your next move.

Hang in there. I was through the last round of adjustments back in '19, and the atmosphere in the plant is always exactly like this—pure uncertainty. It is frustrating that management keeps everyone in the dark, but keep your head down and stay focused on your shift for now. Panic doesn't help anyone, and rumors usually just stir up unnecessary anxiety. If you are worried about your position, definitely start networking quietly, but don't assume the worst until you get that official notice. Take it one day at a time.
