The strategy seems pretty obvious at this point. They’re consolidating into the core financial hubs to reduce overhead and streamline operations. If you are sitting in a regional support office, you’re essentially viewed as a legacy cost that doesn't fit the 'One Goldman' narrative anymore. It’s brutal, but the writing has been on the wall for a while. Don't wait for a notification; start networking outside the firm now, because these satellite locations will continue to shrink until only the absolute bare essentials remain.
It really is death by a thousand cuts. Everyone focuses on the big layoff announcements, but these smaller, rolling reductions are how they avoid making major headlines while slowly gutting entire departments. It’s a classic way to manage morale—keep the staff guessing just enough so they don’t all leave at once, but enough to keep costs suppressed. If you’re outside of the major hubs, the firm’s commitment to you is effectively zero. Honestly, just assume the role is temporary and keep your options open.
