Just got laid off - unexpectedly brutal

Well, it finally happened. Got the call this morning. Was walked out within the hour. I was an analyst in IBD (industrials team) for 2 years. Honestly, I'm still in shock. Performance reviews were good, even got a decent bonus last year. They said it was 'restructuring' and 'performance-related,' but the whole thing felt incredibly impersonal. HR gave me a packet of info and told me to reach out if I had questions. I'm so angry and confused right now. Has anyone else experienced something similar? The lack of transparency is infuriating. Going to need to start hitting the job boards immediately. Any advice for someone unexpectedly unemployed in this climate?

Sorry to hear that, man. Two years in IBD is brutal, and to have it end like that, especially with good reviews, really sucks. Restructuring is often a cover for 'we need to hit numbers.' Don't take it personally, as hard as that is. Network like crazy, update your LinkedIn, and lean on your contacts. A lot of firms are scooping up talent right now. You'll land on your feet.

Color me skeptical about the 'good reviews' part. Goldman is notorious for sugarcoating things until they don't need you anymore. Two years is about right for them to churn analysts. Look at this as a forced upgrade. Use the severance package wisely. Consider whether banking is truly for you, or if this is a chance to pivot to something you'd actually enjoy. There are less soul-crushing ways to make a good living.
