Anyone else noticing weird hiring freezes despite no official announcement?

Hey everyone, been at Google for about 5 years now in a backend engineering role. Lately, it feels like my team's hiring plan for Q3 has just... evaporated. We were supposed to bring on a couple of junior engineers, but suddenly there's 'no budget' and 'headcount freezes' being whispered around, even though we haven't had any official layoff announcements for my org. It's this weird, quiet tension. Anyone else in similar situations? Are other teams seeing the same thing? Trying to figure out if this is a widespread quiet layoff tactic or just my specific division being weird. Feels like the calm before a storm, and frankly, it's more stressful than knowing what's happening.

Yeah, I've heard similar whispers on my team too. It's definitely unsettling when official communication is lacking and you start hearing about budget constraints out of nowhere. It feels like a soft freeze, maybe to control costs without the optics of layoffs. Hang in there, hopefully, it's temporary and just a belt-tightening measure.
