Is it time to update the resume...again?

Seriously, anyone else preemptively dusting off their resume *again* after that Chronicle article? Third time in, what, two years? I'm a Senior SWE in Ads, been here for 7 years, and honestly, the constant uncertainty is starting to wear me down. It's not even about the money anymore, it's the stress of not knowing if you'll have a job next quarter. I'm starting to wonder if it's worth sticking around, even if the pay is good. Considering starting to look at startups, even with the lower pay, for a bit more stability. Anyone else in the same boat? Any tips for updating a resume after being at Google for so long? It feels like a lifetime since I last interviewed.

I feel you. Been there, done that (different company, same song). The constant reorganizations and 'performance reviews' that seem more about cutting costs than actual performance are exhausting. Seven years is a solid run. If the stress is outweighing the benefits, definitely start exploring other options. A startup might be a refreshing change of pace, even with the potential downsides. Just do your research and make sure it's a place with a culture that aligns with your values.

Honestly, this sounds like a bit of an overreaction. Every large company has its ups and downs. Did you read the whole Chronicle article? Sounds like they're tightening the belt, sure, but not a mass exodus. Seven years in Ads means you've probably built up a lot of institutional knowledge and internal connections. That's valuable. Before jumping ship, maybe try talking to your manager about your concerns. You might find there are opportunities for growth or a change of role within the company that could alleviate the stress.
