Petition for layoff protections – is this realistic?

Saw a few articles about Google employees signing a petition demanding layoff protections, especially with all the talk about automation changing the landscape. Honestly, I get the sentiment, but how enforceable is something like that, especially in tech? Companies can always restructure or cite performance. Seems like a long shot to expect significant protections. Has anyone actually seen a tech company implement serious layoff protections beyond standard notice periods? I feel like we're all just trying to navigate this new reality as best we can. Maybe it's more about signaling to leadership, but I'm not sure it'll change the fundamental business decisions. What are your thoughts? Is this just a symbolic gesture, or could it actually lead to something more concrete?

I understand the desire for more security, especially given how rapidly tech evolves. However, the nature of the industry, with its emphasis on agility and often project-based work, makes rigid layoff protections challenging. Companies often point to market shifts or changing business needs as reasons for restructuring. While a petition shows solidarity, legally enforcing such protections against standard business practices is likely an uphill battle.
