Heard anything about severance packages? Need to be prepared

Okay, so I'm not saying anything IS happening, but I've been seeing a lot of chatter about potential layoffs. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row just in case the worst happens. Does anyone know what the standard severance package is like at HP? I've been here for 5 years, in a software engineering role, and I'd like to know what to expect if the axe falls. Is it based on tenure? Are there any negotiations possible? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Trying to figure out how long I can survive before needing a new gig, since the market is rough. Thanks in advance!

Five years should get you something decent. My understanding is they usually offer two weeks per year of service, plus any accrued vacation time. Definitely try to negotiate if you can. HR will likely try to lowball you at first. Do your research and come prepared with data on what similar roles are paying in the market. Also, see if you can get them to cover outplacement services; that can be a huge help with the job search.

Honestly, all this layoff talk seems like the same old rumors that pop up every few months. HP has been through so many restructurings, it's hard to believe there's much left to cut! I wouldn't stress too much until you see something concrete, like a meeting request from HR showing up on your calendar. Focus on your work and keep your head down. Worrying about hypothetical layoffs isn't going to help anything.
