Is the August 27th cull the end of it?

Honestly, the way they handled the August 27th cuts feels like a bad joke. We all knew there was restructuring on the horizon, but the lack of transparency is reaching new levels of absurdity. One minute you're working on a sprint, and the next, your access is revoked. It’s hard to stay focused on the roadmap when you're looking over your shoulder wondering if your desk is next on the list. I’ve been reading the news updates from the Rocket Center reports, and it seems like the site is being dismantled piece by piece. Does anyone know if there’s a target for Q4, or are we just going to keep doing this every few months until there’s no one left? I’m exhausted by the constant fear-mongering and the 'everything is fine' emails from leadership. At this point, the best strategy is just to keep your resume updated and stop tethering your mental health to this company. If you survived this round, don't get too comfortable. Start looking now before the market gets even more saturated with IBMers looking for work.

The current uncertainty at IBM is demoralizing for everyone involved. I’ve been through several cycles like this before, and it never gets easier to see talented colleagues suddenly lose access without any real explanation. It feels less like a strategic shift and more like a chaotic scramble to satisfy quarterly margins at the expense of morale. If you are constantly looking over your shoulder, it is impossible to do your best work. I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for this to be the end of it; until leadership prioritizes transparency, we have to assume that the cuts will continue whenever the numbers dictate a new target.

Look, IBM has been in a cycle of 'restructuring' for over a decade now. While the August 27th date feels particularly brutal due to the lack of warning, this is just standard procedure for them at this point. They trim the fat, claim it is about shifting toward AI and cloud, and then repeat the process six months later when they need to report a better bottom line. If you are still working there, treat it as a temporary engagement and keep your options open elsewhere. Loyalty is a one-way street, and the current atmosphere proves it is finally time to stop pretending otherwise.
