Severance package - what to expect?

Hypothetically speaking... if IBM were to announce layoffs (again), what kind of severance package are we realistically looking at? I've heard different things over the years. I'm in the US, been with the company for 5 years in a technical role. Trying to get a sense of what my options might be if the worst happens. Is it based on tenure? Performance? Anyone been through this recently and willing to share their experience?

It's generally based on tenure. The more years you've been there, the better the package. Five years should get you something decent, probably several months' salary plus benefits continuation. I'd start updating your resume *now*, just in case. Better to be prepared. Keep an eye on internal job postings too, sometimes there are opportunities to move around before layoffs are officially announced.

Honestly, don't get your hopes up too high. IBM severance packages used to be better, but they've been tightening the belt for years. While tenure *is* a factor, they also consider your salary grade. Expect less than you might think and factor that into any decisions you might make if you get the axe. Good luck – it's a stressful situation.
