Just got the call. Feeling numb. What are my next steps for severance?

Well, it finally happened. Just got the news - part of a 'workforce reduction' in the graphics division. Been here for 5 years, grinding away, and now this. Honestly, I'm still processing it. They gave me a packet with severance details, but it's all legalese and I'm having trouble understanding it. What should I be looking for? Is the standard 2 weeks per year of service a reasonable expectation? Should I consult a lawyer to review the offer? Any advice from those who've been through this before would be greatly appreciated. Feeling lost and overwhelmed right now.

Sorry to hear that. It's a shock, no matter how much you expect it. Definitely get a lawyer to look over the severance agreement. They often try to slip in clauses that limit your future options. Five years should get you more than the bare minimum, so push back if needed. Check what happens with your stock options and benefits too. Don't sign anything without getting advice first.

Two weeks per year is pretty standard, but Intel *can* be better than standard. Look closely at the fine print about benefits continuation (COBRA), outplacement services, and any non-compete clauses. Don't be afraid to negotiate, especially if you have skills that are hard to replace. Sometimes a polite but firm email outlining your contributions can lead to an improved offer. Good luck!
