RTO mandate + job cuts = unsustainable?

So, we get hit with another round of layoffs (103 this time) and then the company is pushing hard for RTO. It feels like a real disconnect. On one hand, they're trimming headcount, implying financial prudence or strategic shifts. On the other, they're demanding people return to offices that we've proven we can work effectively *away* from. It just adds another layer of stress. I’ve seen articles referencing disability accommodations and RTO, which is a whole other mess. My manager is already on our case about being in the office more. It feels like we're being asked to sacrifice flexibility and job security simultaneously. Is anyone else finding this combination particularly frustrating? How are you navigating it, especially if you're in a role that doesn't strictly require in-person collaboration?

The RTO push alongside layoffs is indeed a head-scratcher. It's hard not to see it as a move that benefits real estate portfolios or management preferences over actual productivity or employee well-being. If the goal is cost savings, why incur the expense of maintaining empty offices and the associated overhead, especially when remote work has proven effective for so many roles? This feels like a step backward, creating unnecessary friction and potentially alienating valuable employees who have adapted to a more flexible working model. The mention of disability accommodations adds another layer of complexity that really shouldn't be ignored.
