Worried about future layoff rounds - is my role safe in tax?

Anyone else super paranoid about more layoffs coming? I'm in the tax group and honestly, I thought we were pretty safe, but after seeing so many engineers get the axe, I'm not so sure anymore. I've been here for almost 5 years, and I really like my team, but I'm starting to update my resume just in case. My skip-level keeps saying everything is fine and we're 'critical,' but that's what they always say, right? Should I be looking to jump ship now before another round hits? What departments are considered 'safe' (if any) at this point? Or is everyone just living in fear?

I totally get the anxiety. 'Critical' means different things to different people. I remember during the 2008 downturn, our VP said the same thing, and a week later, half the department was gone. Definitely polish that resume and network a bit. It doesn't hurt to explore options. Even if you don't jump ship, knowing your market value can ease your mind.

Tax is generally more stable, but no role is truly layoff-proof. Five years is a good run; Intuit appreciates loyalty. Have you looked into internal transfers? Might be a way to leverage your experience into a more secure area. If your skip-level is truly engaged, maybe ask about long-term projects and strategic priorities. That might give you a better read on your group's actual importance.
