Concerned about bench time and lack of new bid wins

Checking in to see if anyone else is seeing the same thing in the infrastructure group. We just wrapped up a major utility contract and instead of rolling us onto the next one, the brass is telling us to hold tight and 'focus on internal training.' We all know that’s code for waiting for the axe to drop if they don't land a new project in the next month. I’ve been with the firm for five years and I’ve never seen the office this empty. They cut the travel budget last week too, which is usually the canary in the coal mine. I’m starting to get nervous about my utilization numbers. Is it just our region, or is the whole company tightening the belt? The lack of transparency from the top is honestly more stressful than the work itself. I’m hearing rumors that some of the satellite offices are already looking at a 10-15% headcount reduction if the next big proposal doesn't get signed. Really hoping it’s just the usual cyclical uncertainty, but my gut is telling me something is off this time.

Same situation here in the regional office. Management is definitely tight-lipped, but the lack of new bid wins is starting to feel like a structural issue rather than just a seasonal dip. I’ve noticed the same push for 'training modules' which usually signals they’re trying to keep us billable until the layoff list is finalized. It’s a stressful way to operate, and frankly, I don’t blame you for looking at the exit signs. If they’re slashing travel budgets, they’re definitely preparing to balance the books through headcounts soon.

I’ve been tracking the backlog for a while and it’s honestly looking pretty bleak compared to last year. Kiewit usually has a better pipeline than this, but the current silence from leadership is a major red flag. If you’re already hearing 'internal training' as the primary directive, take that as a serious warning to update your resume and start reaching out to your network now. It is much better to be ahead of the curve than waiting around for an HR email that leaves you without a chair when the music stops.
