Hey, I haven't been through it myself at K-C, but I've seen friends at other large corporations go through layoffs. The key things you mentioned – COBRA, outplacement – are pretty standard. Severance pay is usually a formula based on years of service, often a set number of weeks per year, maybe capped. Negotiation is tough; they usually have a policy they stick to pretty strictly. Keep an eye on official communications, but it never hurts to be prepared. Hope it doesn't come to that for you, though.
I'd take the rumor mill with a grain of salt. Companies are always 'realigning' or 'optimizing' which sounds scary but doesn't always mean mass layoffs. If it *does* happen, K-C has a pretty established HR department, so I imagine they'll have a standard package. Don't bank on much negotiation unless you have some unique leverage. Focus on updating your resume and networking regardless. It's good to be proactive, but try not to stress too much based on whispers.
