RTO mandates and the 'performance' narrative

It’s funny how the messaging around RTO has shifted from 'collaboration' to 'performance tracking' over the last few weeks. Since the latest internal policy update, my team has been under a microscope like never before. They are pushing these desk utilization reports and attendance metrics, and it feels like they are building a case for something. We’ve been hitting our KPIs and keeping the ship afloat despite being understaffed, yet the tone from HR is becoming almost hostile. I suspect they want people to quit voluntarily so they don't have to pay out severance packages if they decide to trim the workforce later this year. If they really wanted us back for the sake of the business, they would actually provide tools that work instead of focusing on badge swipes. Just keep your heads down and document everything, because trust in leadership is at an all-time low for me right now.

The shift in narrative is definitely intentional. They’ve moved past the 'culture' facade and are now openly using attendance as a pretext for downsizing. It’s a classic strategy: tighten the oversight, make the environment unbearable, and then point to 'performance' when they decide to trim the headcount further. They don't care about your KPIs if they’ve already decided you’re a line item they want to cut. Document everything, because the goalposts are guaranteed to keep moving.

I’ve noticed the exact same pressure lately. It feels like they are manufacturing a reason to justify layoffs without having to admit the company is struggling. They know we are already stretched thin, but instead of supporting the teams, they’re obsessing over badge swipes and chair time. It’s demoralizing to hit every target only to be treated like you’re failing because you aren't physically in the office enough. Just keep your head down and start looking elsewhere, because this place is only going to get more suffocating.
