Performance Improvement Plans are suddenly everywhere

Is it just my org, or are PIPs being handed out like candy lately? I’ve been at Lyft for three years and never seen this many people being put on formal performance tracks within the same quarter. It feels like a 'soft' layoff tactic to clear the books without triggering WARN notices or severance payouts. I know two people on my team who were told they weren't meeting 'new expectations' despite exceeding their KPIs last cycle. The goals are shifting so fast that it’s impossible to keep up, and then management uses that as leverage to build a case. It really feels like they are clearing out the mid-level staff to make the numbers look better for the next quarterly report. If you’re currently working here and haven’t started documenting all your wins and saving them to a personal drive, start doing it now. This feels like the calm before a much bigger storm.

It is definitely happening across the entire company. Management is clearly squeezing the budget by moving the goalposts until it becomes impossible for tenured employees to survive. I have seen the same thing in my department—people who were high performers six months ago are suddenly being told their work is subpar. They are absolutely using PIPs to prune the headcount without the legal headache or cost of a formal layoff. Keep your head down, document everything, and start looking for other opportunities now because this cycle of 'performance management' is only going to intensify.

I honestly don't think it is just your org. The vibe shift has been palpable for a while now, and the 'new expectations' excuse is just a convenient cover for headcount reduction. It is a classic move to avoid the public relations nightmare of mass layoffs while still forcing people out the door. If you are seeing your high-performing colleagues get targeted, it’s a massive red flag that leadership is prioritizing the bottom line over stability. Update your resume, reach out to your network, and prepare for the worst. It is not personal, it is just corporate strategy.
