Worried about performance reviews being used to justify cuts?

Anyone else nervous about these upcoming performance reviews? I'm on the engineering side, been here for almost 4 years, and while I think my work is solid, the overall vibe feels...off. Like they're looking for any reason to mark people down. I'm not usually paranoid, but I've seen this happen at other companies before layoffs. It's a classic way to build a case for letting people go "due to performance" instead of just saying it's a cost-cutting measure. Makes severance packages cheaper, I guess. Am I crazy, or are others feeling this too?

I feel you. It's always stressful when performance reviews coincide with whispers of layoffs. They're probably trying to CYA. Document *everything* you've accomplished recently – projects, positive feedback, metrics. Have concrete examples ready to counter any vague criticism. Don't be afraid to push back politely if something feels unfair or inaccurate. Good luck!

Honestly, I think you're overreacting. Every company does performance reviews. It's not necessarily a sign of impending doom. If you're a solid performer like you say, you'll probably be fine. Focus on what you can control: continue doing good work, be a team player, and try not to get caught up in the anxiety. Dwelling on the 'what ifs' will just make you miserable.
