Anyone else notice the travel freeze/hiring pause?

Is it just my region, or has everything gone silent regarding open requisitions? I’ve been hearing rumblings about tightening overhead costs for the next fiscal year, and suddenly all the external posting activity in our division has grinded to a halt. My manager was being super vague during our 1:1 yesterday when I asked about the timeline for backfilling the vacancy on our team. It felt like he was reading from a script he didn't really believe in. People are acting jumpy during meetings, and the usual chatter about summer projects is pretty much nonexistent. I've been with MLM for a few years and this 'do more with less' mantra feels different this time around, like they’re trying to squeeze every cent out of the operations before making a harder pivot. Has anyone seen actual offer letters go out recently, or are we just stuck in a holding pattern while they decide on headcount targets for Q3/Q4?

It is happening across the board, not just in your region. I’ve noticed the exact same pattern in my division. Requisitions are being pulled left and right, and the talk about 'optimizing overhead' is corporate speak for a total freeze. My manager stopped giving updates weeks ago, and now they just change the subject if anyone brings up the open roles. It is definitely creating a weird atmosphere in the office. Everyone is nervous about where the budget cuts are going to land next.

Stop looking for clarity from management; they aren't going to tell you anything until they’re forced to. When the company starts tightening the belt this aggressively, it usually means the quarterly targets were missed and they’re scrambling to pad the numbers before the fiscal year ends. Don't stress about the backfill for now. Just keep your head down, do your work, and start dusting off your resume on the side. If they're freezing hiring, they're likely already planning the next round of 'efficiencies.'
