Just got laid off – what severance package should I expect?

Well, it finally happened. Got the call this morning. After 5 years in the data analytics department, I'm out. Honestly, I'm still in shock. They said it was a 'restructuring' and my role was 'eliminated.' Didn't give me much detail beyond that. HR is sending over the severance package details next week, but I'm trying to get a sense of what's typical. Anyone else been through this recently at Mastercard and willing to share their experience with the severance? Trying to figure out if what they offer is fair. Was in grade 8 and based in O'Fallon MO.

Sorry to hear that. Layoffs are brutal. While I haven't been directly affected at Mastercard, I've heard through the grapevine that severance usually hovers around 2 weeks per year of service, plus accrued vacation payout. Benefits continuation is usually offered for a few months, but you'll likely have to cover the premiums. Definitely push back if the initial offer seems low; they often have some wiggle room. Good luck!

Five years...that sucks. Don't get your hopes up too high. In my experience (not at Mastercard, but a similar financial institution), companies try to lowball you initially. Review everything carefully – especially the non-disparagement clause. Think about what you're willing to sign away in exchange for the money. Consult with an employment lawyer if anything seems fishy. A small investment now could pay off big later. Don't sign anything under pressure!
