Interview

What skills are actually valuable post-layoff?

So, my department (Engineering) just had some major restructuring. A bunch of people I've worked with for years are gone. Now I'm trying to figure out what skills are truly 'safe' or in demand, not just at MC, but externally. I've got a strong background in backend Java and cloud infrastructure (AWS), but honestly, a lot of the buzz is around data analytics and maybe some specific front-end frameworks. Anyone who's been through this before, or who's hiring, what are you looking for? Trying to future-proof my career here, feeling pretty exposed right now.

Anyone else seeing budget cuts across the board? Seems serious.

Hey everyone, been seeing some weird stuff lately on my team (Product Dev, ~4 years here). Budgets for training and even basic office supplies seem to be getting slashed. We had a QBR last week and the CFO's tone was super grim about spending. Normally it's just noise, but this feels different. Anyone else in different departments (e.g., Marketing, Risk) noticing similar things? Is this just general economic tightening, or is something bigger brewing under the surface? Feels like we're being set up for something.

If layoffs happen, what's the rehire policy? Asking for a friend...

Hypothetically speaking, if someone were to be affected by a potential reduction in force, does anyone know what the rehire policy is like at Mastercard? My 'friend' (cough) is wondering how long they'd have to wait before they could potentially apply for a different role within the company, assuming things stabilize. Also, does prior service count towards benefits/tenure if rehired? It's all very theoretical, of course, but good to know the possibilities. I'm not looking for legal advice, just general info based on past experience or what you've heard.

Heard some whispers about 'resource optimization' - anyone know more?

I'm in the tech org, been here almost 8 years. I've seen a few reorganizations, but the language being used lately is...different. Keep hearing 'resource optimization' and 'strategic alignment' from my manager and skip-level. Usually that's code for 'we're about to cut people'. Has anyone heard anything concrete? Are certain departments being targeted? Trying to gauge whether I should be updating my resume or if I'm just being paranoid. Feeling really on edge and it's impacting my productivity. This place used to be so stable. Any insights appreciated!

Rant: Performance reviews are a joke!

Seriously, what's the point of these stupid performance reviews? I busted my butt all year, delivered on every project, and even took on extra responsibilities. My manager even *said* I was doing great in our one-on-one meetings. Then, review time comes around, and suddenly I'm just 'meeting expectations'? It's so demoralizing. Feels like they already decided who was getting what rating before the review even started. And the worst part? It directly impacts bonus and potential for promotion. If they're trying to cut costs, why not just be honest instead of playing these stupid games with people's careers?

Layoff Report

Just got laid off – what severance package should I expect?

Well, it finally happened. Got the call this morning. After 5 years in the data analytics department, I'm out. Honestly, I'm still in shock. They said it was a 'restructuring' and my role was 'eliminated.' Didn't give me much detail beyond that. HR is sending over the severance package details next week, but I'm trying to get a sense of what's typical. Anyone else been through this recently at Mastercard and willing to share their experience with the severance? Trying to figure out if what they offer is fair. Was in grade 8 and based in O'Fallon MO.

Anyone else feeling uneasy about headcount 'adjustments'?

Been at Mastercard for almost 7 years now, in the tech division. I've seen the company grow like crazy, and honestly, it feels like we're bloated. My team's been 're-orged' twice in the past year, and each time, it feels like shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. Heard some whispers from a buddy in Finance about 'efficiency initiatives' and 'resource optimization.' I'm not dumb; that usually translates to layoffs. Anyone else getting the same vibes? Especially with the market the way it is...

Rant: This place has turned into a pressure cooker!

I'm so fed up with the constant pressure to deliver more with less. It feels like they're squeezing every last drop of productivity out of us. My team is already stretched thin, and now they're talking about 'restructuring' and 'streamlining'. My manager is useless, and constantly reminds us of 'performance reviews'. Honestly, the morale is in the toilet. If they're planning layoffs, just get it over with already! The uncertainty is worse than the actual axe. I've started looking for other jobs, and I can't wait to get out of this toxic environment. I've been here for 3 years, and it's been going downhill fast.

Severance Package Question: Negotiation?

Hypothetically speaking, if Mastercard were to offer a severance package, is there any wiggle room to negotiate it? I've heard stories of people getting an extra month or two, or maybe some extended benefits. Does anyone have any direct experience with this at Mastercard? I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth attempting to negotiate, or if they have a pretty rigid, take-it-or-leave-it policy. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I have been at Mastercard over 10 years.

Anyone else feeling super anxious at Mastercard lately?

I've been with Mastercard for almost 7 years now, in a tech role (software engineer). Usually, things are pretty chill, but lately, there's been this weird vibe. Lots of closed-door meetings, VPs whispering in the hallways, and just an overall sense of unease. I know other people in my department feel it too. No official announcements or anything, but I can't shake the feeling that something's coming. Anyone else picking up on this? Am I just being paranoid? I'm starting to think I should update my resume just in case.
