Rant: Performance review season is such a joke!

Seriously, every year it's the same BS. We bust our butts all year, hit our targets (and often exceed them), and then they nickel and dime us on the performance reviews. "Needs Improvement" in some random vague area that wasn't even mentioned during the year, just to justify a smaller bonus. Meanwhile, the execs get fat bonuses while they're squeezing every last drop out of us. And the worst part is, everyone knows the system is rigged, but nobody says anything. It's so demoralizing. I'm starting to feel like just doing the bare minimum is the only sane way to approach this job anymore.

I feel your pain. It's like they have a quota for 'Needs Improvement' ratings. My coworker got dinged for 'communication' even though he led multiple successful cross-functional projects. Document everything, even if it feels pointless. Save every email, meeting note, and accomplishment. It won't guarantee a better review, but it'll give you ammo to push back. Also, start looking for another job. Sometimes, the best raise is a new employer.

Maybe it's not *always* a conspiracy. Are you genuinely open to feedback? Sometimes we're blind to our own weaknesses. Instead of immediately assuming the review is rigged, try to understand the 'Needs Improvement' area. Ask for specific examples and a plan to improve. If they can't provide those, then you have a valid complaint. But if they can, it might be an opportunity for growth, even if the timing sucks.
