Are performance reviews suddenly way harsher?

Okay, maybe this is just me, but the last round of performance reviews felt significantly tougher than usual. Usually, it's a pretty standard process, maybe a few areas for improvement. This time, though, it felt like nitpicking. Goals that were set seem almost impossible to hit, and the feedback is focused on very specific, sometimes seemingly minor, things. A few people I've spoken to informally (carefully, of course) have mentioned similar experiences. It's making me a bit anxious about what comes next. Is this a company-wide push to weed people out, or just a new management fad? Feels like a lot of pressure without clear direction.

It's definitely not just you. I've heard the same whispers around the office, and honestly, my own review felt like a different beast this time. It’s like the goalposts moved mid-game. I'm not at your company, but I've seen this happen at previous places, often as a precursor to layoffs or restructuring. Management might be trying to build a case for why certain positions aren't performing to a new, higher standard, or perhaps they're just trying to squeeze more out of everyone before making changes. Keep documenting everything and stay aware of your surroundings.
