Leadership gaslighting about 'targeted' cuts

It’s genuinely laughable to hear the internal spin being pushed down from the top. They keep calling these 'targeted adjustments' as if they aren't systematically dismantling entire departments to make the margins look prettier for the shareholders. When you have a $14B market cap but you’re still scrambling to trim 50-60 people every few months, it’s not an 'adjustment'—it’s a lack of vision. I’ve talked to two different managers in the last week who were just as blindsided as their reports. The disconnect between what’s being said at the top and the reality on the ground has never been wider. It’s hard to stay motivated to ship features or fix bugs when the product strategy seems to change based on whatever will stop the stock from bleeding for a week. Anyone else just checking out mentally? I find myself spending more time updating my resume and scrolling job boards during 'focus time' than actually coding. At this point, I don’t even care about the 'Okta values' slides they show us. Just pay me until the inevitable email comes, and then I’m moving on to a place that actually understands its own business model.

It's the same script every time. They bank on the 'targeted' label to prevent a total exodus, but the revolving door is becoming a permanent fixture. When leadership claims these cuts are strategic rather than a desperate attempt to appease Wall Street, it just proves they’ve lost touch with the people actually keeping the lights on. It’s impossible to feel secure when you know you’re just another line item being optimized for the next quarterly report.

Honestly, the lack of transparency is the most insulting part. Managers are just as clueless as the ICs, which tells you everything you need to know about the top-down culture right now. Calling it a vision adjustment is insulting to anyone with a calculator. If they had a real plan for sustainable growth, they wouldn’t be hacking away at headcount every single quarter. It’s time to stop drinking the corporate kool-aid and start updating your resume.
