Anyone else blindsided by the East Point announcement?

I’ve been at Packaging Corp for six years now, and the vibe at the plant has been off for months, but I honestly didn't think they’d pull the plug on 103 people in Georgia this quickly. We all saw the WARN notice hit the wires on Tuesday, but the communication from management has been absolute radio silence since then. I have friends at the Lakewood Ave facility who literally walked into their shifts yesterday and were told it was their last day. The rumors were swirling about cost-cutting measures after the last quarterly earnings call, but seeing it manifest this way is brutal. It feels like every time we hit a minor snag in production numbers, the hammer drops on the shop floor rather than leadership taking a hit. Does anyone actually believe the 'operational efficiency' line they’re feeding us, or are we all just waiting for the next shoe to drop? I’m genuinely worried about what this means for the broader materials division. If they’re willing to axe that many in one go at a major hub, it makes me wonder how long the rest of us actually have before the consultants come knocking at our sites. Checking my resume tonight—stay safe out there, everyone.

I'm sorry you're going through this, but honestly, it feels like this was inevitable given how the industry has been trending lately. Management at Packaging Corp has always treated people like line items on a balance sheet rather than actual employees. Seeing them pull the rug out from under 103 people with zero notice is disgusting, though sadly not surprising for this company. Don't waste your energy waiting for a memo; start updating your resume today. The market is tight, but your experience will carry some weight elsewhere.

What happened at East Point is a complete disgrace. People deserve better than walking into a shift only to be told their livelihood is gone. I've been watching the quarterly reports, and while they scream about cost-cutting and efficiency to the shareholders, the people on the floor are the ones paying the real price. The silence from leadership isn't just rude, it's cowardly. Keep documenting everything you were told and make sure you get every penny of your severance. Reach out to the local labor groups; you shouldn't have to navigate this alone.
