The 'strategic restructuring' line is getting old. I was at Packaging Corp for years before they pulled this kind of nonsense on our shift. It’s always the same: keep everyone in the dark until the very last second so nobody can prepare. If you’re caught up in this, talk to a labor lawyer immediately. Don't sign any severance agreements without having them reviewed. These companies bank on people being too panicked to push back for what they are actually owed.
That Lakewood notice is absolutely brutal. My heart goes out to those 103 people who walked in for a normal shift and walked out unemployed. It’s sickening how they hide behind corporate buzzwords to avoid taking responsibility for the impact on these families. I’ve seen this happen at other sites, and the 'severance' is usually a joke designed to keep people quiet. Everyone affected needs to document everything and stay in touch with their coworkers. Solidarity is the only thing that keeps them honest.
