Anyone else noticing the weird internal hiring freeze?

Is it just my department, or is everyone seeing the hiring freeze suddenly tightening? I was told we had headcount approved for a backfill three weeks ago, and now HR is telling us it’s 'under review' indefinitely. Usually, when they start stalling on backfills that were already budgeted, it’s a precursor to something else. The vibe in the office has been pretty off lately too—a lot of sudden 'syncs' with leadership that seem to have no real agenda other than making sure everyone is at their desks. I’ve been here for a few years and this feels exactly like the calm before a storm. Has anyone heard anything about budget reallocations for Q4? I’m getting tired of the 'business as usual' emails when the signs are pointing to a total lockdown on spending.

Same here. We had a verbal offer ready for a candidate in my group, and it was pulled off the table out of nowhere last Tuesday. Leadership is being completely tight-lipped, but the 'under review' status is definitely company-wide corporate speak for a broader restructuring. Don't waste your energy trying to get straight answers from HR right now; they’ve clearly been instructed to stonewall everyone until the official announcement drops. Keep your resume polished and stay alert during those random syncs, as they usually signal impending headcount reductions.

I’ve been through this cycle before at PTC, and the pattern is textbook. First, they stall on the backfills, then they implement the 'strategic review' of departments, and finally, the actual layoffs follow a few weeks later. The lack of transparency from management is the biggest red flag. If your manager is dodging questions about the hiring freeze, it’s because they likely already know what's coming and aren't allowed to talk about it. Take the hint, update your LinkedIn, and start quietly reaching out to your network before the market gets flooded with the rest of our coworkers.
