Anyone else seeing the back-to-office push intensifying?

Is it just my department, or is the RTO pressure turning into a soft layoff strategy? Suddenly leadership is obsessed with badges being scanned and tracking attendance metrics, despite the fact that our dev productivity hasn't dipped since we went remote. It feels like they're trying to make the environment just annoying enough that people quit voluntarily so they don't have to pay severance. I’ve noticed a few senior architects 'retiring' early in the last two weeks, and the vibe in the Slack channels is incredibly quiet. It’s hard to focus on shipping features when everyone is whispering about who got pulled into a surprise 1:1 with HR. Does anyone have actual intel on whether this is a precursor to a wider reduction in force, or are they just trying to justify the office lease spend for the quarter?

It is definitely happening across the board. The badge tracking is just a paper trail they need for HR compliance before they start the next round of cuts. They know exactly what they are doing by mandating these office days. Most of the senior folks I know are already updating their resumes and looking for fully remote roles elsewhere. If you aren't looking yet, you probably should be, because they are clearly trying to thin the herd without triggering the legal requirements of a formal layoff.

I think people are reading way too much into the RTO policy. Leadership just wants to see people back in the building to justify the expensive office lease and maintain some level of culture. It is not some grand conspiracy to avoid severance; it is just standard corporate management trying to reset to pre-pandemic habits. If you enjoy the office, it is fine, and if you don't, you are free to find another job. Not everything is a secret strategy to force people out.
